Winner: Mats Hummels

Mats Hummels rolled back the years with his performances in the heart of the Borussia Dortmund defence in the first half of the season. The veteran centre-back was written off by many following the summer arrivals of Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck. But he showed that he is not even close to being done yet.

Hummels showed incredible resilience, anticipation and positioning to keep opposition attackers at bay time and time again. He led the team really well and delivered high-level performances on a consistent basis.

While he was not able to earn a place in the Germany squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the national team’s performances in Qatar certainly showed that they would have been better off with Hummels in defence.

Loser: Emre Can

Emre Can’s stock fell further at Borussia Dortmund as he was limited to just eight starts across all competitions in the first half of the season. While he did have a few decent outings on the pitch when he played, the versatile midfielder also looked susceptible to sloppy errors more often than not.

Can did not even come close to earning a place in the Germany squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. And his future at Borussia Dortmund also appears to be uncertain at best.
