Loser: Thomas Meunier

After his encouraging performances last season, there was hope that Thomas Meunier could kick on and play a bigger role for Borussia Dortmund. But that did not materialise in the first half of the season, and the Belgian international often looked like a liability at right-back.

Defensive lapses, sloppy passes and cheap giveaways were all a constant feature of Meunier’s game for much of the first half of the season.

He often looked like the odd man out, much like he has for the majority of his BVB career. And had it not been for injuries and illnesses, Meunier would have found himself behind Marius Wolf in the pecking order at right-back.

Meunier’s hinrunde ended early as he suffered a cheekbone fracture in the second round of the DFB-Pokal. And the fact that Niklas Süle, who is a centre-back, did a much better job than him while filling in at right-back certainly does not bode well for the 31 year old.
