Borussia Dortmund left-back Raphael Guerreiro was on target for Portugal as they beat Switzerland 6-1 on Tuesday to qualify for the quarterfinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Raphael Guerreiro returned to the Portugal starting XI on Tuesday evening as they took on Switzerland in the round of 16 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. And the left-back delivered an excellent performance as Portugal cruised to a 6-1 win.
Guerreiro looked lively every time he ventured forward from left-back. And he showed great composure to score Portugal’s fourth goal in the 55th minute. The 28 year old made a fine run down the left flank before firing his shot past Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer and into the back of the net.
The Borussia Dortmund left-back then capped off his impressive performance by setting up Portugal’s sixth goal in stoppage time, which was scored by AC Milan forward Rafael Leão.
SL Benfica striker Gonçalo Ramos scored a hat-trick for Portugal and veteran defender Pepe was also on target in the 6-1 win. Former Borussia Dortmund defender Manuel Akanji scored a consolation goal for Switzerland. While BVB goalkeeper Gregor Kobel was an unused substitute as Switzerland were eliminated from the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Portugal’s reward for their 6-1 win is a quarterfinal clash against Morocco, who beat Spain on penalties to secure their place in the last eight of the World Cup. Morocco, who have former Borussia Dortmund full-back Achraf Hakimi in their squad, will certainly provide a tough test to Raphael Guerreiro and co. when the two sides square off on Saturday.
