Former Germany captain Lothar Matthäus believes that Youssoufa Moukoko would be better off staying at Borussia Dortmund, amid interest from a number of top clubs in the world.
With his current contract set to expire at the end of the season, Youssoufa Moukoko is attracting the interest of some of the biggest clubs in the world. Borussia Dortmund are also hoping to keep the highly rated striker at the club, and have offered him a contract extension.
And former Bayern Munich midfielder Lothar Matthäus believes that the 18 year old should establish himself in the Bundesliga before thinking about making a move abroad. During an appearance on BILD TV (via Süddeutsche Zeitung), Matthäus said:
"“I think Moukoko would be well advised to sign a long-term contract with Borussia Dortmund. He should first establish himself in the Bundesliga, then achieve international success with Dortmund in the Champions League and also develop further in the national team under Hansi Flick. He can still go to the Premier League when he’s 22, 23.”"
It was reported by Ruhr Nachrichten last week that Borussia Dortmund are close to reaching an agreement in principle with Moukoko over a new long-term contract. But that report was quickly rubbished by his agent.
The likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, FC Barcelona, and Manchester United are all said to be interested in signing Youssoufa Moukoko. The striker said last month that he would like to stay at Borussia Dortmund. But he also wants to ensure that he will get the playing time he needs so he can continue his development.
Moukoko established himself as Borussia Dortmund’s first-choice striker and managed to score six goals and assist a further four in just 14 Bundesliga appearances in the first half of the season. His performances also helped him earn a place in the Germany squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
