Borussia Dortmund’s Ansgar Knauff has impressed while on loan with Eintracht Frankfurt, with Die Adler looking to keep the wide player on a permanent basis.

According to recent reports surrounding Ansgar Knauff’s loan at Frankfurt, the 20 year old’s situation is far from clear at this time. Knauff initially joined Frankfurt on loan during Marco Rose’s tenure at BVB, when there was seemingly no room for the player in the squad.

The player had done well under Edin Terzić prior to Rose’s arrival, and the former is said to be a fan of the player. And he even stated in October that Knauff will indeed be returning to Dortmund once his loan spell is over.

For Eintracht Frankfurt’s part, they do not have any sort of buyout clause, which means Borussia Dortmund do inevitably hold the final say. Knauff played a strong role in the Eagles’ Europa League triumph last season, and it makes sense for them to try to keep the core group of players that achieved this feat together to mount further challenges and compete for future silverware.

In many ways, Knauff’s future will also come down to the project presented to him. The player is still quite young and he will certainly be looking for a long term opportunity to get minutes on the pitch. As of right now, I’m not sure Knauff would be a regular starter for Borussia Dortmund, which makes Frankfurt the more logical option for him in terms of playing time.

That being said, Ansgar Knauff’s versatility may provide him with more openings to compete for a position in Borussia Dortmund’s starting XI. He is capable of playing as a wing-back and as a winger; positions that Dortmund are currently looking to fill. There is still much we don’t know about the team’s current situation as there are many moving pieces and possible departures that may occur. Knauff may yet find a place for himself in this Dortmund squad, and it would be a very welcome occurrence to see one of the club’s youth academy products carve out a role as an important member of the squad.
