Borussia Dortmund legend Roman Weidenfeller has heaped praise on Gregor Kobel, calling him one of the club’s most important signings in recent history.

Gregor Kobel made the switch to Borussia Dortmund from VfB Stuttgart last summer and has established himself as one of the most important players in the team over the last 18 months. After a few years of uncertainty between the sticks, the Black and Yellows finally have a goalkeeper they can consistently rely on.

And Roman Weidenfeller believes that Kobel has already matured into a real leader on the pitch for Borussia Dortmund. In an interview with BILD, the BVB legend said:

"“At such a young age, he has already matured into a leader on the pitch. For me, he’s an outstanding goalkeeper who still has huge potential.”“Gregor is excellent on the line, very strong with his feet and confident with his control of the penalty area. He is a leader at BVB. On top of that, he’s a talented youngster. Personally, I think Gregor is one of the most important transfers in the club’s recent history in terms of the next few years.”"

Gregor Kobel began to show his immense potential last season following his move from Stuttgart for a fee of 15 million euros. He made a number of outstanding saves but was often let down by poor defending from those in front of him.

The 25 year old has taken another big step in his development this season, delivering a number of match-winning performances for his side. His most notable moment came in the UEFA Champions League group stage clash against Manchester City, when he made an excellent save to keep out Riyad Mahrez’s penalty.
