Winter Review: Borussia Dortmund’s best and worst performers of the season so far
Emre Can
One of the most disappointing aspects of Emre Can’s inclusion on this list is that his talent warrants more production. Capable of playing multiple positions, he should be a key asset for Edin Terzic as he aims to navigate a congested fixture list and incorporate a balance of youthful flair and veteran stability. Unfortunately, this simply hasn’t come to fruition for Can since he arrived at the club.
He’s been prone to errors in ball possession and seems far too confident in his ability to regain it once it’s been lost due to careless naivety. Time and time again it has resulted in unnecessary cheap fouls and bookings. Discipline in regard to positional awareness has also let him down on multiple occasions this season. The final Werder Bremen goal in that disastrous early season home loss comes to mind.
While not expected to be a routine starter by any stretch of the imagination, Can’s inability to step into that role, even sparingly, is cause for concern to the extent that Sebastian Kehl should look for external reinforcements. However, the tone regarding transfer policies would suggest that there simply won’t be any notable arrivals before the summer. One which could very well see Jude Bellingham depart for what would be a record-breaking fee.
