Raphael Guerreiro has given Borussia Dortmund a big boost ahead of the start of the second half of the season by recovering from his muscle problems and making his return to training.

Borussia Dortmund are set to play their first competitive game of 2023 on Sunday, as they take on FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga. The Black and Yellows will likely have the majority of their squad available for the game. According to Kicker, Raphael Guerreiro is also back in training after being sidelined last week due to muscular problems.

The Portuguese international could now start at left-back against FC Augsburg this weekend, with new signing Julian Ryerson potentially slotting in at right-back. The Norwegian international joined Borussia Dortmund earlier this week after Thomas Meunier suffered a muscle injury that will keep him sidelined for a number of weeks.

Guerreiro’s return is a big boost for Borussia Dortmund, who do not have too many options in their first-team squad at left-back. The highly rated Tom Rothe is the only other natural left-back in the squad, and he is just coming back from a long-term injury. Ryerson can also play at left-back, but Meunier’s injury means that he will be needed at right-back.

Thorgan Hazard was also used at left-back in the first half of the season, and also started in that role in the friendly match against FC Basel last week.
