Julian Ryerson [6/10]

Ryerson’s match could not have had a worse start as Mainz’s Lee Jae-sung scored within the first 90 seconds from a corner. The South Korean headed home as he faced no resistance from Ryerson, who was too passive in his marking.

But two minutes later, Ryerson emulated Nico Schlotterbeck’s ‘zero to hero’ moment from Sunday’s game in which he found the net shortly after contributing to the opponent scoring. Julian Ryerson’s first goal for Dortmund came just at the right time.

Niklas Süle [6/10]

Niklas Süle replaced Mats Hummels in the starting XI and was solid on his defensive interventions. His physical presence ensured that opposing attackers didn’t have enough comfort or space to make the right decisions.

Nico Schlotterbeck [7/10]

One of Borussia Dortmund’s better performers, Nico Schlotterbeck provided a massive improvement from his performance against Augsburg. Despite not being on the scoresheet for this game, Schlotterbeck was solid at the back and kick-started many BVB attacks in the second half. He won a number of crucial duels and also made some vital clearances for his side.

Raphael Guerreiro [5/10]

The Portuguese international did not enjoy a colorful night in Mainz. The offensive contributions from the left side of the pitch were kept to a minimum throughout the entirety of the game. Slow decision-making in the second half hindered Dortmund’s offence. Such a performance will do little to convince Sebastian Kehl to extend his contract which ends this summer.
