Gio Reyna came off the bench to score the winning goal once again as Borussia Dortmund came from behind to beat Mainz 05 in stoppage time.

Borussia Dortmund left it late once again as a 93rd minute winner from Gio Reyna helped them earn a 2-1 win over Mainz 05. It was a below par performance from the Black and Yellows, but Reyna came up clutch for the second time in three days to secure the three points for his side.

With Jude Bellingham out suspended, Edin Terzic decided to bring Emre Can into the starting XI. While Niklas Süle came into the team for Mats Hummels, who was carrying a knock.

Mainz came out of the blocks quickly and needed only 90 seconds to take the shock lead. Lee Jae-sung headed home from a corner to stun the away side.

But Borussia Dortmund responded immediately as Julian Ryerson’s shot from long range found the back of the net via a deflection. The Norwegian international’s first goal in a BVB shirt helped his side get back on level terms after just four minutes.

Borussia Dortmund took control of the game after their equaliser, and created a number of half chances in the first half. Youssoufa Moukoko, Karim Adeyemi, and Donyell Malen all came close before the break. But the two sides could not be separated going into half-time.

BVB lost their momentum after the break and found it much harder to break down the Mainz defence for much of the second half. Edin Terzic decided to bring on Sebastien Haller, Gio Reyna and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens in search for a winning goal. And his substitutions worked to great effect once again.

Borussia Dortmund looked much more dangerous going forward after the the trio were introduced to the pitch. And Haller and Reyna combined for the winning goal, which came in the third minute of stoppage time.

The Ivory Coast international headed Julian Brandt’s corner onto Reyna’s path, and the 20 year old showed great composure to find the back of the net from close range.
