Borussia Dortmund were victorious on their mid-week away trip to Mainz in the Bundesliga on Wednesday, winning 2-1 at the MEWA Arena.

Borussia Dortmund have managed to pick up two wins out of their first two games back in the Bundesliga since the post-break restart, but neither result so far has been fully convincing. Following a 4-3 win in their thriller against FC Augsburg, Dortmund managed to snatch a last gasp winner against Mainz courtesy of Gio Reyna. The win puts them 5 points behind league leaders Bayern Munich with the race for top four very tight at the moment.

The game opened up with a defensive blunder in the first minutes for Dortmund. A Mainz corner beat Dortmund’s defense, with Lee Jae-sung scoring the resulting header. The player marking him, Julian Ryerson, was quick to make amends however scoring his first goal for Die Schwarzgelben just two minutes later.

Dortmund would go on to dominate the first half, pinning Mainz back in their own half for much of the first 45 minutes. The second half would see Mainz come back and look the more dangerous of the two teams, especially after they subbed on new signing Ludovic Ajorque, who proved to be a handful for Dortmund’s defense. Dortmund were eventually able to bring all 3 crucial points home, with Haller providing the assist for Reyna via a deft flick-on as Brandt delivered a cross from the corner. With this result indeed representing a crucial three points for the club, lets take a look at some of the key takeaways from the game.
