Gio Reyna delighted to make the difference for Borussia Dortmund after difficult few weeks
Gio Reyna was delighted to make the difference once again for Borussia Dortmund as he came off the bench and scored the winner for the second game running.
Gio Reyna’s impressive start to the second half of the season continued on Wednesday, as he came off the bench and scored a 93rd minute winner for Borussia Dortmund against Mainz 05. Just days after his stunning match-winner against Augsburg, the USMNT international made a telling impact once again for his side.
The strong start to 2023 will certainly come as a relief to Reyna, who endured a difficult few weeks during the winter break. But he is now delighted to be back on the pitch, and wants to keep making an impact for his side.
"“When I came on, I wanted to make a difference. We haven’t performed well away from home lately. But we gave everything until the end. It wasn’t always pretty to watch. We made some important changes, worked hard and now things are going in the right direction.”“Everyone has difficult times in their lives. Football can help me to get out of it. I want to work hard and help the team.”"
Reyna is now determined to force his way back into the starting XI. But he is not worried about his playing time, and is determined to help the team in any way he can.
"“Of course, I want to start. But I don’t think about it too much. My chance will come if I keep working hard in training,” Reyna said."
Edin Terzic also praised Reyna after the game, and said that he hopes the attacking midfielder can continue his fine run of form in the coming weeks.
"“It’s not been easy for Reyna in recent weeks, particularly in the American media,” Terzic said during his post-match press conference. “The things that he’s been accused of there, we can’t confirm. But with us, Gio has always worked hard and never been guilty of anything.”“We brought him on to accelerate the game. In the end, he did his job. The fact that he scored the winning goal again is of course excellent for him. We hope he carries on like this.”"
Wednesday’s goal helped Gio Reyna take his tally for the season to four, an impressive return considering he has been limited to just 730 minutes of playing time so far. The 20 year old now appears to be fully fit once again after his injury struggles last year. And he will no doubt have a key role to play for Borussia Dortmund in the second half of the season.
