Borussia Dortmund and Belgium national team winger Thorgan Hazard has joined PSV Eindhoven on loan until the end of the season.

A player whose transfer was met with general excitement and optimism back in 2019, Thorgan Hazard’s time at Borussia Dortmund has been a rather mixed bag. His start to life at the Westfalenstadion was solid, particularly in the Bundesliga. The Belgian international scored 7 goals and provided a further 13 assists in his debut campaign across 33 league appearances.

Since then, Hazard has not been able to replicate these numbers, both in terms of output and overall appearances for the club. A number of factors may have played a role bringing about the Belgian’s decline, including a fairly long list of injury struggles.

With the signing of Belgian compatriot Julien Duranville, Borussia Dortmund likely saw it as high time that they allowed Thorgan Hazard to seek pastures new. Especially considering the fact that they have plans to integrate Duranville into the first team setup.

PSV Eindhoven do not have a purchase option for Hazard. But they will pay a loan fee of around 500,000 euros and cover the winger’s entire salary for the next six months.

"Announcing the transfer, Sebastian Kehl said: “Thorgan Hazard approached us with the desire to be loaned out to a club where he can play regularly. Eindhoven, third in the Eredivisie, is in the thick of the championship battle and is also still in the Europa League. We wish Toto plenty of playing time and maximum sporting success in the coming months.”"

Over the course of this season, Thorgan Hazard had very limited time on the pitch for BVB, amassing a total of 738 minutes across the Bundesliga, Champions League and DFB-Pokal.

At PSV, Hazard may be offered a chance to re-discover the form that made him one of the Bundesliga’s most exiting players for Gladbach.

He wouldn’t be the first, with Mario Götze also joining PSV after leaving BVB, where he was able to jump start his career, and then move back to the Bundesliga with Eintracht Frankfurt, where he is now an integral part of their midfield.
