DFB-Pokal Roundup: Bayern, Leipzig, Union Berlin through to the quarterfinals

Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, Union Berlin, and VfB Stuttgart all booked their spots in the quarterfinals of the DFB-Pokal this week.

Four of the eight DFB-Pokal round of 16 ties took place this week, and we were treated to some thrilling matches. Union Berlin secured their place in the quarterfinals after defeating the in-form Wolfsburg 2-1. Niko Kovac’s side struck first through Luca Waldschmidt, but Robin Knoche equalised for Union Berlin before Kevin Behrens netted the winner in the second half.

João Cancelo starred on his Bayern Munich debut as the Bundesliga leaders comfortably dispatched Mainz 05. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Jamal Musiala, Leroy Sané and Alphonso Davies scored to help Bayern secure their place in the quarterfinals of the DFB-Pokal.

RB Leipzig made it 17 games unbeaten in all competitions as they cruised to a 3-1 win over TSG Hoffenheim. Emil Forsberg, Konrad Laimer and Timo Werner were all on target for Marco Rose’s side. While Kasper Dolberg scored what only proved to be a consolation goal for Hoffenheim.

A dramatic late comeback helped VfB Stuttgart avoid an upset, as they beat SC Paderborn 2-1. The 2. Bundesliga side took an early lead thanks to an own goal from Konstantinos Mavropanos. But new signing Gil Dias made an instant impact on his debut and brought Stuttgart back on level terms in the 86th minute, before Serhou Guirassy headed home the winner in the 95th minute.

The DFB-Pokal round of 16 will continue next week, with Borussia Dortmund, Eintracht Frankfurt and SC Freiburg all set to be in action. The draw for the quarterfinals of the DFB-Pokal will be made on February 12.
