Borussia Dortmund have confirmed the appointment of Jan Zimmermann as the new head coach of their U-23s team.

Jan Zimmermann has been appointed as the new head coach of the Borussia Dortmund U-23s, just two days after the club’s decision to part ways with Christian Preußer. The 43 year old quickly became the Black and Yellows’ preferred candidate, and has now put pen to paper on a contract until the end of next season.

Zimmermann took charge of his first training session on Wednesday. He will make his debut in the dugout on Saturday, when BVB II go up against fourth placed FC Saarbrücken in the 3. Liga.

Zimmermann helped TSV Havelse win promotion to the 3. Liga in 2021 and then joined second division side Hannover 96. He was sacked by Die Roten after 17 games, and has been out of a job ever since.

A number of third division clubs had shown an interest in appointing Zimmermann as head coach in recent months. But he has now decided to join Borussia Dortmund II, where he will be aiming to make an instant impact.

Borussia Dortmund U-23s are currently 16th in the 3. Liga standings, and have lost 12 of their 21 games so far this season. They are just one point and one place clear of the relegation spots, and are among the lowest scoring teams in the league.

Chsitian Preußer, who only joined BVB II in June, paid the price for the team’s poor form and was sacked earlier this week. And Jan Zimmermann has now been tasked with helping the club avoid relegation to the Regionalliga.
