Bundesliga Roundup: Union Berlin stun Leipzig as title race remains neck and neck

The top three in the Bundesliga standings continued their winning runs, as Union Berlin came from behind to hand Leipzig a shock 2-1 defeat.

Matchday 20 of the Bundesliga season produced plenty of exciting action, as Union Berlin remained hot on the heels of league leaders Bayern Munich. Urs Fischer’s side came from behind to defeat RB Leipzig 2-1 and make it six wins in a row in all competitions since the turn of the year.

Second half goals from Janik Haberer and Robin Knoche helped Union Berlin turn things around after Benjamin Henrichs had given Leipzig the lead.

Bayern Munich managed to retain their one point lead at the top of the Bundesliga standings as they cruised to a 3-0 win over VfL Bochum. Thomas Müller, Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry were all on target for the Bavarians.

Borussia Dortmund kept pace with the top two by claiming a 2-0 win away to Werder Bremen. Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Julian Brandt scored in the second half to help the Black and Yellows continue their excellent run of form.

Ellyes Skhiri scored a brace as FC Köln handed Eintracht Frankfurt a shock 3-0 defeat on Sunday. Timo Hübers was also on target for the Billy Goats, who extended their unbeaten run to five games.

Bayer Leverkusen halted their slide by earning a 3-1 win over TSG Hoffenheim. Goals from Robert Andrich, Moussa Diaby and Adam Hlozek helped Xabi Alonso’s side heap more misery on the struggling Hoffenheim.

SC Freiburg moved up to fourth place after earning a come from behind win over Stuttgart. Vincenzo Grifo scored two penalties to turn the game on its head after Chris Führich’s first half opener.

Hertha Berlin boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation as they handed Borussia Mönchengladbach a shock 4-1 defeat. Gladbach actually took the lead through Nico Elvedi. But Jessic Ngankam equalised at the half hour mark, before Marton Dardai scored from 25 yards out to give Hertha the lead. The Berliners then made sure of the win thanks to goals from Derry Scherhant and Dodi Lukebakio in added time.

Jae-sung Lee scored a brace as Mainz 05 beat Augsburg 3-1 to move up to 12th place in the Bundesliga standings. Karim Onisiwo was also on target for the 05ers, while Ermedin Demirovic scored what only proved to be a consolation goal for Augsburg. Schalke 04 made it three goalless draws in a row, as they managed to frustrate Wolfsburg for 90 minutes.
