Borussia Dortmund will take a one goal lead into the second leg of their Champions League tie against Chelsea after Karim Adeyemi’s stunning solo goal helped them win the first leg 1-0.
Special Champions League nights call for special moments. And Karim Adeyemi produced one for the ages at the Westfalenstadion on Wednesday evening. The 21 year old scored an incredible solo goal to give Borussia Dortmund a hard fought 1-0 win in the first leg of their round of 16 tie.
The Black and Yellows delivered a battling performance from the first whistle to the last, and they successfully managed to nullify the Chelsea attack for much of the game. And a breathtaking goal from Adeyemi was enough to help them secure a 1-0 win in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie.
Edin Terzic made two changes to the Borussia Dortmund side that beat Werder Bremen on Saturday. Salih Özcan and Marius Wolf came into the team in place of Marco Reus and Julian Ryerson. Jude Bellingham captained Dortmund, while Sebastien Haller started up front.
Borussia Dortmund dominated possession for the majority of the first half and had a couple of promising moments going forward. But it was Chelsea who created the better chances in the first half. Thiago Silva had a goal disallowed for handball, while João Félix hit the crossbar for the away side. But there was nothing to separate the two teams going into the break.
Chelsea came out of the blocks quickly in the second half. They dominated possession and created a host of fairly decent chances. Gregor Kobel made an important save to deny Reece James. And just one minute later, Karim Adeyemi produced a moment of magic.
The Germany international did really well to control a clearance from a Chelsea corner and raced forward on his own on the counter attack. With not much help from his teammates, Adeyemi managed to glide his way past Enzo Fernández and Kepa Arrizabalaga before turning the ball into the back of the net to send the Westfalenstadion crowd into raptures.
Buoyed by Adeyemi’s goal, Borussia Dortmund defended with excellent resolve. Emre Can made a crucial goal-line clearance to prevent Kalidou Koulibaly from scoring, before Kobel denied Fernández with another good save in the closing stages of the game.
Borussia Dortmund managed to see out the win in the end. And they will now take a narrow but vital one goal lead into next month’s second leg in London.
