Edin Terzic has said that Donyell Malen is ready to make an impact for Borussia Dortmund despite his lack of game time in recent weeks.

Donyell Malen has endured a difficult start to 2023 and has lost his spot in the starting XI. The Dutch forward has been limited to just 19 minutes of playing time in Borussia Dortmund’s last five matches across all competitions. But Edin Terzic has hinted that he could get his chance in the coming games.

During his press conference ahead of Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga clash against Hertha Berlin, Terzic said that Malen has been working very hard in training.

"“Donny played the first few games from the start. He hasn’t been on the pitch much in the last few games. We decided to give one or two others a chance and they have been performing well. But he’s really stepping on the gas in training.”"

The Borussia Dortmund head coach also stated that Malen could be a potential option to replace Youssoufa Moukoko, who is set to be sidelined for the next six weeks after picking up an ankle injury last weekend.

"“We now have a new situation in the forward line with the injury to Youssoufa Moukoko. Donyell is also capable of playing there and maybe that’s the player we’re missing. It’s always possible that he can be used in that position. He has to be prepared for that. We know about his quality, we see it every day in training. We hope that he can implement it in the game.”"

Sebastien Haller and Anthony Modeste are the other strikers in the Borussia Dortmund squad. But Malen could offer something different to the team if called upon.

Donyell Malen has only scored one competitive goal for Borussia Dortmund this season, and that goal came all the way back in late July in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. He has still yet to fully find his feet in the Bundesliga.

The 24 year old has primarily been used as a winger since joining the Black and Yellows from PSV Eindhoven in 2021. Perhaps, getting the opportunity to play through the middle is just what he needs to revitalise his career at the club.
