Marco Reus and Karim Adeyemi starred as Borussia Dortmund dispatched Hertha Berlin 4-1 to go level on points with Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga standings.
There is a three-way tie at the top of the Bundesliga standings after Borussia Dortmund closed the gap to Bayern Munich and Union Berlin on Sunday evening. The Black and Yellows handed Hertha Berlin a 4-1 defeat, with Karim Adeyemi, Donyell Malen, Marco Reus and Julian Brandt all on target.
Marco Reus set the tone for Dortmund, delivering a performance of the highest quality. He helped set up the first two goals before finding the net with a beautifully struck free-kick.
The Borussia Dortmund captain returned to the starting XI as Edin Terzic made wholesale changes to his side after the win over Chelsea. The likes of Jude Bellingham, Sebastien Haller and Niklas Süle all received some much-needed rest, while Donyell Malen started up front
Borussia Dortmund made a very sloppy start to the game and looked off the pace early on. They gifted a couple of decent half chances to Hertha early on, but Gregor Kobel made sure that no damage was done to the BVB goal.
The home side finally managed to find their groove in the 27th minute as Marco Reus breezed past three defenders and picked out Karim Adeyemi, who turned the ball into the net with a lovely back-heel finish.
Adeyemi then set up Donyell Malen for Borussia Dortmund’s second goal just four minutes later. But the Germany international pulled his hamstring in the process and was forced to come off with an injury. Although he appeared to be walking relatively comfortably after the game.
Borussia Dortmund’s two goal lead was halved in the 46th minute, as more careless defending allowed Lucas Tousart to score.
But Borussia Dortmund showcased their incredible attacking quality to put the game to bed. Marco Reus restored his side’s two goal lead with a brilliantly struck free-kick. Julian Brandt then made it 4-1 after being set up by Jamie Bynoe-Gittens.
Borussia Dortmund showed once again that they are ready to battle it out for the Bundesliga title this season. Up next for them is a trip to Hoffenheim, who have lost their last four games in the Bundesliga.
