Roman Bürki: If you do not perform, you quickly become worthless
By Tushar Bahl
Roman Bürki has admitted that it wasn’t easy for him to accept losing his spot at Borussia Dortmund. But he does not have any bad blood with the club.
Roman Bürki parted ways with Borussia Dortmund last summer, joining newly formed MLS side St. Louis City SC. With the 2023 Major League Soccer season about to get underway, the Swiss shot-stopper will get his opportunity to make his competitive debut for his new club very soon.
Ahead of that, Bürki spoke about his time at Borussia Dortmund and the club’s decision to freeze him out of the team in an interview with Ruhr Nachrichten. The 32 year old said that it was difficult for him to accept the decision at first, but added that he is happy with the way things are going currently for his former employers.
"“I was there for almost seven years. I grew fond of the players and the people. It wasn’t a happy ending, even though I got one final game and I was able to say goodbye to the fans and my teammates. Sometimes football is also business. If you don’t perform well, you quickly become worthless.”“I had to accept that, even though it wasn’t easy. But that was the club’s decision. And when you see where they are now, they’ve done a lot of things right,” Bürki said.“I don’t have any bad blood in me. I’m still in contact with many players, and I’m also happy that things are going so well for them.”"
Bürki made a total of 233 appearances for the Black and Yellows after joining the club from SC Freiburg in 2015. But he lost his spot in the team in 2021 and was then replaced by compatriot Gregor Kobel.
With no prospects of playing time at Borussia Dortmund, Roman Bürki made the decision to move to the United States and joined St. Louis City SC last year. St. Louis City SC will be debuting in the MLS this year, and Bürki has been named club captain.
The goalkeeper said that he is looking forward to getting started at his new club, and added that everyone at St. Louis City SC feels well prepared for their inaugural season in the MLS.
