Stefan Effenberg: Borussia Dortmund displaying Bayern-like mentality
By Tushar Bahl
Stefan Effenberg has heaped praise on Borussia Dortmund, saying that Edin Terzic’s side are displaying a mentality like Bayern Munich this season.
Borussia Dortmund have enjoyed a stunning start to 2023, winning all nine of their matches so far since the turn of the year. The Black and Yellows have moved up to second place in the Bundesliga standings, and are only behind Bayern Munich on goal difference.
This is the first time in Borussia Dortmund’s history that they have made such a good start to a calendar year. And Stefan Effenberg believes that Edin Terzic’s side have established themselves as a real competitor for Bayern Munich this season. In his column for Sport1, the former Bayern Munich and Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder wrote:
"“They’ve won 1-0 five times, have kept nine clean sheets – that definitely speaks volumes about their stability. They’ve really found their feet.”“I also applaud BVB for wins like the one against Hoffenheim. 1-0, dirty, scrappy, you have to push yourself to the limit.”"
Stefan Effenberg was also impressed with Julian Brandt’s interview after Borussia Dortmund’s win over Hoffenheim, during which he said that they will look to stay grounded and keep improving despite their impressive winning run.
"“That’s actually the Bayern mentality. Never being satisfied even though you won a game 1-0, but pointing out what you can do better. That’s why they’re a genuine competitor for FC Bayern this year.”"
The sense of togetherness in the Borussia Dortmund camp has been pivotal to their excellent run of form since the turn of the year. Players have stepped up for the team’s cause, which is something that had been missing in recent seasons.
Borussia Dortmund’s title credentials will be put through a number of tough tests in the coming weeks, with games against RB Leipzig, Chelsea, Schalke 04, and Bayern Munich coming up. BVB have put themselves in an excellent position. Now they need to keep this run going in order to make this season a memorable one.
