Bundesliga title race: Bayern Munich dispatch Stuttgart to return to the top
By Tushar Bahl
Bayern Munich reclaimed their spot at the top of the Bundesliga standings after seeing off the challenge of VfB Stuttgart on Saturday.
Bayern Munich earned a 2-1 win away to VfB Stuttgart on Saturday evening to climb back to the top of the Bundesliga table. Despite facing a late scare, Julian Nagelsmann’s side managed to claim the three points courtesy of goals from Matthijs de Ligt and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting either side of half time.
The win helped Bayern Munich return to the top of the Bundesliga standings on goal difference. Both Bayern and Borussia Dortmund have 49 points after 23 matches. But the Bavarians have a much superior goal difference (+44 vs +19).
Meanwhile, third placed Union Berlin failed to keep pace with the top two as they were held to a goalless draw by FC Köln on Saturday. They are now five points shy of the top spot, with RB Leipzig a further two points behind in fourth place.
The Bundesliga title race will continue in full swing next weekend, with both Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich set to square off against their local rivals.
The Black and Yellows will make the trip to the resurgent Schalke 04 for the latest edition of the Revierderby. While Bayern Munich will be at home to FC Augsburg in the Bavarian derby.
Next weekend’s fixtures could have a major say in the title race, and there are only two matchdays left before Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund collide in what will be a massive six-pointer at the top of the Bundesliga standings.
