Borussia Dortmund were made to rue missed chances as Schalke 04 came from behind twice to earn a 2-2 draw in the 100th edition of the Revierderby in the Bundesliga.

Borussia Dortmund’s disappointing week came to a frustrating conclusion on Saturday evening as they were held to a 2-2 draw by arch-rivals Schalke 04. Despite taking the lead twice, the Black and Yellows conceded two very soft goals as their winning run in the Bundesliga came to a crashing halt.

The draw means that Borussia Dortmund are now two points behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga standings, with ten games left before the end of the season.

With several key players sidelined due to injuries and illness, Edin Terzic was forced into making a number of changes to his starting XI. Mats Hummels made his return to the side, while Raphael Guerreiro started in midfield and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens replaced Marco Reus in attack.

The game got off to a cagey start, with both sides looking to ensure that they did not make any mistakes. Hummels set up Borussia Dortmund’s first chance of the game in the 18th minute as he sent Guerreiro through on goal with a lovely long ball. But the Portuguese international failed to beat Ralf Fährmann from close range.

Schalke were then presented with a golden opportunity to score six minutes later, but Rodrigo Zalazar fluffed his shot after going through on goal.

Donyell Malen had the best chance of the first half after some lovely link-up play in the build-up, only for Fährmann to deny him. Marius Wolf then forced the Schalke goalkeeper into action.

But Fährmann was beaten just one minute later, and it was Nico Schlotterbeck who opened the scoring. The centre-back found the bottom corner with a beautifully placed effort from the edge of the box to give Borussia Dortmund a well deserved lead going into the break.

Schalke came out of the blocks quickly in the second half. And they managed to get back on level terms in the 50th minute. A giveaway from Jude Bellingham resulted in a quick-fire counter-attack, and Marius Bülter turned the ball home from close range.

Borussia Dortmund got their lead back just ten minutes later thanks to a moment of magic from Raphael Guerreiro. The 29 year old found the top corner with a deft finish for his fifth goal against Schalke 04.

But the home side weren’t to be denied, and they managed to get back on level terms once again in the 79th minute. Kenan Karaman found the back of the net with a fine header to give Schalke a well deserved equaliser and hand Borussia Dortmund a big blow in their hopes of winning the Bundesliga title.

Neither team was able to find a late winner and the Revierderby ended all square. The draw will feel very much like a defeat for Borussia Dortmund, who will now have to play catch up to Bayern Munich in their bid to win the Bundesliga title.
