Borussia Dortmund’s Marius Wolf receives Germany call-up
Borussia Dortmund’s Marius Wolf has received his first call up for the German National team in recognition of his recent performances.
The last few months have been a bit of a roller coaster for Borussia Dortmund utility man Marius Wolf. The former Frankfurt player had to deal with cardiac concerns at the tail end of 2022 which required the player to undergo heart surgery.
Since the start of the Rückrunde however, Wolf has been a large part of Dortmund’s renaissance, deputizing at fullback for the club and doing a very good job of it. The numbers paint the picture of a player that has done his best to make the most of his appearances for the club: 2 blocks, 1.4 shots, 3 progressive carries and 1.5 successful take ons per 90 minutes are indeed impressive indicators that underline his good form. They also highlight Wolf’s hardworking nature, something he has been credited for on numerous occasions over the years.
These performances have now been recognized by German national team head coach Hansi Flick. Wolf has been called up for the upcoming international break alongside Kevin Schade (Brentford), Josha Vagnoman (VfB Stuttgart), Mergim Berisha (Augsburg), and Felix Nmecha (VfL Wolfsburg), a list of fresh faces that will make up a new look Germany side.
Flick is likely looking to see what options he has to work with ahead of Euro 2024, which will be hosted by Germany. The international friendlies against Peru and Belgium will be a good chance for Wolf to stake his claim to a spot in the Germany roster and insure future call-ups become a reality. Wolf’s versatility will also work in his favor, as he is able to play both on the wing as well as in defense.
Wolf will be joined by Borussia Dortmund teammates Emre Can and Nico Schlotterbeck, with Can also impressing significantly over the course of the second half of the season as well. With this being Wolf’s first call up, the player will indeed be looking to keep up his impressive form and make sure his hard work on the pitch continues to be recognized by both club and country.
