Doneyll Malen continues to tease his potential with strong showing against Köln

The curious case of Donyell Malen continues to be a point of intrigue for those who follow Dortmund closely. The Dutch international has been known to go hot and cold quite often since he’s donned Die Schwarzgelben‘s colors, so much so that many are often vary when he puts in a display like the one he did against Köln, because lets be honest, it was very, very good.

Malen was able to showcase some of the facets of his game that the club initially sought him out for during his time with PSV.

He worked hard to put Köln’s defense under pressure from the very first whistle. A very clever nutmeg on Julian Chabot set up Rapha for the opener in the very early stages of the game, and Donny himself got on the scoresheet after firing a strong shot on goal that Marvin Schwäbe couldn’t keep out of his net.

If Malen can continue to work hard and put in these sort of performances, the Borussia Dortmund attack would be well placed to truly give Bayern and the rest of the league trouble in the remaining fixtures. That is a big if, however, as it will need consistency on Malen’s part. There hasn’t been a lack of effort on his part, so one can hope that this performance is finally the one that helps him really take off in a Borussia Dortmund kit.
