Borussia Dortmund duo Jude Bellingham and Raphael Guerreiro enjoyed a winning start to the Euro 2024 qualifiers on Thursday evening.
The road to Germany began on Thursday evening with matchday one of the Euro 2024 qualifiers. Two Borussia Dortmund players were in action for their countries on Thursday. Jude Bellingham and Raphael Guerreiro both impressed as their national teams claimed important wins.
England went up against Italy in what was a repeat of the Euro 2020 final. And the Euro 2020 runners-up handed the reigning champions a 2-1 defeat in Naples.
Goals from Declan Rice and Harry Kane helped the Three Lions take a 2-0 lead in the first half, before Mateo Retegui halved the deficit in the 56th minute. But England managed to hold on for the win, even though Luke Shaw was sent off in the 80th minute.
Jude Bellingham impressed for England once again, as he dominated the battle in the middle of the park. The Borussia Dortmund midfielder caused Italy all sorts of problems with his relentless energy and drive. He was substituted in the 85th minute.
Raphael Guerreiro also continued his fine run of form as he helped Portugal cruise to a comfortable 4-0 win over Liechtenstein. Playing at left wing-back, the 29 year old put in another fine shift for his national team.
Bayern Munich full-back João Cancelo opened the scoring for Portugal early on, before second half goals from Bernardo Silva and Cristiano Ronaldo (x2) helped the Euro 2016 winners begin their qualifying campaign for next year’s championships with a dominant win.
