Report: Raphaël Guerreiro has yet to receive a contract extension offer from Borussia Dortmund
According to a recent interview, Raphaël Guerreiro has not been offered a contract extension as of yet.
Borussia Dortmund’s Raphaël Guerreiro has been one of the clubs strongest performers since making the switch from left back to midfield; a move that many have lauded Edin Terzić for. The change in position has brought out and highlighted some of Rapha’s best qualities as a footballer.
Rapha’s performances so far have yielded 5 goals and 10 assists across the Bundesliga and the Champions League, quite a few of which have come in recent outings from his new position. Theses performances have prompted Dortmund to re think their stance regarding the player.
Prior to this change in form, the player was seemingly set to leave the club on a free transfer this summer. The signing of Ramy Bensebaini was meant to spell the end of the Portuguese international’s time in Germany, but reports surfaced that the club would offer him an extension after the winter break in light of his newfound form and ease with which he has made the midfield his own.
In a recent interview however, Rapha indicated that the club has not yet offered him an extension:
"“It’s great to play at BVB , in this great stadium. I’m very happy with my career in Germany, the stadiums are always full! An extension? At the moment the club has not made any offer.”"
It is clear that the Portuguese international is happy playing in Dortmund; something that the player has noted on more than one occasion. While Rapha may not yet have any news to share regarding an extension, it is still expected to be offered to the player. With the player reinventing himself in a position of interest for Die Schwarzgelben, and extension only seems like the natural course of action for both player and club.
This transition into midfield adds credence to the previously explored concept that Bensebaini and Guerreiro can coexist in one team, without either impeding significantly on each other’s minutes on the pitch. Rapha’s transition into midfield means that he can retain playing time while also acting as an auxiliary player at left back if needed. The player’s versatility also allows him to play out wide if needed, adding to both his value to Dortmund as well as his own playing prospects should he indeed re-sign with the club.
