Borussia Dortmund have allegedly shown interest in RB Leipzig’s midfielder Dani Olmo, who only has one year left on his contract.

In the advent of news dropping that Borussia Dortmund will likely be losing Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid, the Ruhr club will be looking to use a good portion of the funds generated by Bellingham’s sale to strengthen the squad for the coming season. One of the names recently mentioned as part of that attempt to strengthen the squad is RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo.

Olmo has rejected a contract extension with Leipzig, which means that RB are likely to sell the player this summer in order to not lose him on a free transfer in 2024. Dortmund are said to be looking to add more creativity to the side, with Olmo noted as one of the targets due to his aforementioned contract situation.

While Olmo is undoubtedly a talented player, it’s unlikely that Leipzig would be willing to let Olmo go to one of their direct competitors should offers from abroad materialize. Barcelona are also said to be interested in the player, which would be a far more appealing option for the club.

On Dortmund’s end, it’s hard to see where Olmo would fit without further departures. Marco Reus, Julian Brandt (both of which just recently signed contract extensions) and Gio Reyna all represent completion for Olmo in the starting 11. Olmo would certainly be able to compete and start for Dortmund, but this would represent a rather bloated number of attacking midfielders when other positions currently need addressing.

Signing Olmo would then represent a bit of a luxury signing For Dortmund, hence it seems a rather unlikely move at this time. Things change very quickly in the world of football however, and if Dortmund were to indeed bring Olmo in, he would certainly be a strong signing purely on the basis of how talented he is.
