Sebastian Kehl has stated that everyone at Borussia Dortmund wants Mats Hummels to stay at the club beyond the end of the season.
The current contract of Mats Hummels is set to expire at the end of the season, and it still remains to be seen what the future holds for the defender. Borussia Dortmund have offered the 34 year old a new one year contract, but he is still mulling over his options and wants to take his time before deciding what he wants to do beyond the end of the season
Sebastian Kehl has commented on Hummels’ future, stating that he would like to keep the defender at the club for at least another season. During his appearance on Sky90 on Sunday, the Borussia Dortmund sporting director said:
"“Mats Hummels has been outstanding in recent weeks. He is very important for the team and is incredibly ambitious. He wants to win the Bundesliga title with BVB. We are in very good talks. I can’t announce anything yet. We’ll have to wait a little longer.”“We want to extend the contract with Mats, and he knows that. And Mats also knows that we need a decision on this soon. Preferably before the end of the season. Everyone at Borussia Dortmund would like Mats Hummels to stay for another year.”"
Mats Hummels has shown with his performances this season that he is still more than capable of playing at the highest level. He was one of the team’s top performers in the first half of the season and was unlucky not to be called up by Germany for last year’s FIFA World Cup.
Hummels, who left Bayern Munich to return to Borussia Dortmund in 2019, has made a total of 466 appearances for the club. He is the second highest appearance maker in BVB history, behind only Michael Zorc. The veteran centre-back has rolled back the years on a number of occasions this season, and the hope will be that he decides to stay on at the club for another year.
