Bayern Munich are not in the race to sign Ajax Amsterdam midfielder Edson Álvarez, with Borussia Dortmund and clubs from England retaining serious interest.

Borussia Dortmund remain hot on the heels of Ajax midfielder Edson Álvarez, but will not face competition from Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich for his signature, per Sky Sport. The links between the player and the Bundesliga have been gaining traction over recent weeks, but should the player make the jump to German’s top flight, Dortmund look to be in the pole position for his signature.

Of course, just because Bayern are no longer in the race does not mean that Dortmund will not face competition for his signature however. Reports indicate that “top clubs” from England are also interested, which if true could change the financial feasibility of any deal that Dortmund would look to strike with Ajax and the player. The financial sums involved may change unless the Mexican International himself is set on a move to the Westfalenstadion, which he seems to be considering quite intently.

Álvarez, should he join Die Schwarzgelben, will be one of the first signings of Sporting Director Sebastian Kehl’s second summer in charge. The former Dortmund captain and Germany international will have his hands full this summer as the uncertainty surrounding a handful of Dortmund’s key players looms large, particularly in the midfield. Álvarez would go some way towards alleviating the possible departure of players such as Jude Bellingham, Mahmoud Dahoud and Raphaël Guerreiro, but of course he would only be one piece of the puzzle, with Enzo Le Fée touted to be among the players Dortmund is targeting as well.

Time will tell whether or not Álvarez will be in Dortmund’s starting 11 next season, but with the rumors around the player intensifying, it would not be surprising to see more concrete news become available in the coming weeks. As a player that is both versatile in terms of where he can play (both as a defensive midfielder and a center back), as well as the fact that he is a player approaching his prime, he is undoubtedly a very interesting and appealing player for Dortmund to be targeting.
