SV Darmstadt 98 will return to the Bundesliga next season after sealing promotion from the 2. Bundesliga on Friday evening.
After narrowly missing out on promotion last season, SV Darmstadt 98 made sure that they did not let their chance slip this year as they secured a top two finish in the 2. Bundesliga on the penultimate matchday of the season. The Lillies clinched promotion to the German top flight on Friday evening by claiming a 1-0 win over Magdeburg, courtesy of Phillip Tietz’s first half goal.
A resolute defence that has conceded just 29 goals in the 2. Bundesliga this season helped Darmstadt see out the win, and plenty of celebrations ensued at the Stadion am Böllenfalltor as they secured a return to the Bundesliga after a six year absence.
Darmstadt are coached by Torsten Lieberknecht, a former teammate and roommate of Jürgen Klopp. The 49 year old has led Darmstadt really well this season and has incorporated a real fighting spirit in the team.
Striker Phillip Tietz is Darmstadt’s top scorer this season, with 12 league goals to his name. They have former Borussia Dortmund II defender Christoph Zimmermann and ex-Hertha Berlin left-back Fabian Holland marshalling their defence. While Klaus Gjasula, who set the record for most yellow cards in a single season in the Bundesliga in 2020, is also part of their squad.
SV Darmstadt 98 can now look ahead to what promises to be a very exciting season for them in the Bundesliga. One of FC Heidenheim and Hamburger SV will have the chance to join them in winning automatic promotion to the German top flight.
