With the 2022/23 season in the books, Borussia Dortmund will now begin work on how to bolster their squad during the summer transfer window.

Although the last matchday did not end in the way anybody at Borussia Dortmund would have wanted, the club can take many positives away from this season. The squad is strong and balanced for the most part, but there are a few areas of the pitch that need to be addressed.

An issue Borussia Dortmund had this season was not having enough options in the defence and midfield positions, especially during the injury crises before the winter break. Sebastian Kehl and co. will look to address that in the coming months, and also bring in new signings to lead their title charge next season.

Here we take a look at some of the players Borussia Dortmund should consider signing this summer.

Defence

Borussia Dortmund do not have a lot of depth at centre-back, and those in charge may look to change that in the summer. A centre-back that would fit the BVB system must be able to read the game well, be comfortable with the ball, and also play the occasional long ball forward.

A player who has these qualities is Attila Szalai. Currently at Fenerbahçe, the 25 year old could add some competition for places and much needed depth at centre-back for Borussia Dortmund. Another option could be Southampton’s Armel Bella-Kotchap. The highly rated Germany international could be available for cheap following Southampton’s relegation from the English Premier League.

Borussia Dortmund’s current full-backs lack defensive dominance when playing against fast and skilful wingers. For the right-back position, those in charge could potentially consider RB Salzurg’s Amar Dedić. The 20 year old is not only able to create chances from his position, but is also strong defensively. Lutsharel Geertruida of Feyenoord has been linked with BVB in the past, and could be another potential option.

As Raphael Guerreiro departs Borussia Dortmund this summer, the club will look to bolster the left-back position. Ramy Bensebaini appears set to replace the Portuguese international. But an alternative could be Real Madrid’s Ferland Mendy. The Frenchman has found life difficult in the Spanish capital and will likely be looking for a new club this summer.
