Edson Álvarez has admitted that there is a good chance he could leave Ajax this summer, amid interest from Borussia Dortmund.

A busy transfer window awaits Borussia Dortmund this summer, with bolstering the midfield set to be high on their agenda. Edson Álvarez is said to be on top of BVB’s list of targets, and the defensive midfielder has now revealed that he could leave Ajax this summer.

In an interview with Voetbal International, the defensive midfielder acknowledged that he is ready to take the next step in his career.

"“The chance is there, but with chances in football it can go either way. Especially with transfers, only the signature counts in the end. Everything that happens before is nice and all, especially with rumours. But until a transfer is complete, it doesn’t make much sense to speculate. I experienced that last year too, when Chelsea had concrete interest.”“Yes, I do think so,” Álvarez said when asked if he is ready to take the next step in his career. “Again, without selling Ajax short, but my mission here is almost complete. I have won many trophies with Ajax, been able to develop myself, as a player and as a person, and overcome many challenges. As a top athlete, it feels good to go for a new challenge at some point, in a different environment, different league.”"

Álvarez also admitted that it is nice to be linked with moves to big clubs. But he also feels very much at home at Ajax, and is grateful for everything the club has done for him.

"“I also read and hear from the media about the interest, and of course I’m not going to lie, it’s always nice when you are linked with big clubs. But Ajax is also a big club for me, so I will always treat everything and everyone here in Amsterdam with respect. I am hugely grateful to everyone for everything.”"

Borussia Dortmund are leading the race for Edson Álvarez’s signature, and have reportedly reached an agreement in principle on personal terms with him. But a number of English Premier League clubs are also interested in signing the 25 year old, including the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea.

The BVB bosses are set to hold talks with their Ajax counterparts in the coming days. Ajax director of football and former BVB chief scout Sven Mislintat is expected to demand a transfer fee in the region of 40 million euros for the Mexico international.
