Comparing Ramy Bensebaini and Julian Ryerson
Borussia Dortmund have now bolstered their full-back ranks twice already this year, with Ramy Bensebaini and Julian Ryerson both joining the club. There is high probability that they will be competing for the left-back spot next season.
While Ryerson is more of a ball carrier with strong take-on numbers, Bensebaini relies on long balls and through balls behind the defensive line. That makes him a strong weapon, considering Borussia Dortmund have wingers like Karim Adeyemi and Donyell Malen who are capable of running in behind.
Like Bensebaini, Ryerson is also a strong defensive presence, especially in the air. While the former builds his game on interceptions, the latter is more of a destroyer in the middle third. Naturally this difference is also attributed to the difference in the playing style of the two Borussias.
Both these players defend aggressively and prefer initiating counter-attacks which is great for Edin Terzic to build a consistent system across the season with complementing attacking styles from the two left-backs. Having two strong players at left-back will also result in healthy competition for the spot. A problem that the BVB head coach will no doubt be happy to have.
Last but not the least, Bensebaini, like everyone else in the squad is hungry to make a mark. As we saw in Sebastien Kehl’s remarks: “Ramy’s in his prime. In our talks with him, we saw his unwavering desire to fight for titles with our team.”
In Ramy Bensebaini, Borussia Dortmund gain an aggressive ball playing left-back who is strong in the air and also adds a bit of firepower in the attack. Let’s hope that he can live up to the billing and quickly make his mark in front of the BVB faithful.
