Gregor Kobel is seemingly the favourite to become Borussia Dortmund captain next season, with Marco Reus reportedly considering handing over the armband.

The captaincy issue at Borussia Dortmund has come under the microscope in recent days, with both Sebastian Kehl and Hans-Joachim Watzke staying coy over who will wear the armband next season.

Marco Reus has been the club captain at BVB since 2018, and is held in high regard in the dressing room. But this week’s edition of SportBILD claims that he is seriously considering giving up the captaincy ahead of the new season.

Both Reus and vice-captain Mats Hummels are inching towards the end of their careers. And while they extended their Borussia Dortmund contracts to stay at the club for another year, the BVB bosses may look to appoint a new captain this summer with a view towards the future.

The magazine adds that Gregor Kobel is now considered the favourite to become Borussia Dortmund captain for the new season. The Swiss goalkeeper has been one of the Black and Yellows’ most consistent performers since joining the club from VfB Stuttgart two years ago.

Kobel appears to be have climbed up the leadership hierarchy at Borussia Dortmund in recent months, and those in charge may now look to hand him the captaincy armband as the club enters a new era.
