Borussia Dortmund have parted ways with Ansgar Knauff as Eintracht Frankfurt have signed the player on a permanent deal for a low seven-figure fee.

Borussia Dortmund have yet another departing face to say farewell to this week in the form of Ansgar Knauff who has opted to join Eintracht Frankfurt on a permanent deal. Knauff, who is a product of Dortmund’s youth academy, joined the club back in the 2016/17 season and worked his way up to the senior squad in 2021.

Knauff joined Frankfurt on loan in January of 2022, and was an important part of the Die Adler side that won the UEFA Europa League against Scottish Premiership side Rangers. Knauff remained on loan at the club this past season and while having played a more bit-part role under Oliver Glasner this time around, he was still part of the team that made their way to the final of the DFB Pokal, where Frankfurt would eventually lose to RB Leipzig.

Knauff’s permanent transfer to Frankfurt has been a move that many expected, but it wasn’t initially a given. Earlier this past season, head coach Edin Terzić was very clear on his intentions to bring Knauff back to Borussia Dortmund once his loan at Frankfurt expired. Terzić even went as far as to say that he was in constant contact with the player, and that the plan was for him to return to the Westfalenstadion.

Of course, things change quickly in football, and Dortmund have re-prioritized their plans for this transfer window in light of the departures of players that have left or will leave the club shortly. Funds will be needed to bring in new faces that can play a more integral role for Dortmund next season. While it’s unfortunate to see a Dortmund academy product leave his story at the club unfinished, it may prove to be the best step for Knauff’s career long term.
