Emre Can has admitted that Borussia Dortmund’s failure to win the Bundesliga title this season will probably stay in his mind for a long time.
Borussia Dortmund lost the Bundesliga title to Bayern Munich on goal difference after a dramatic final day of the season last month, and Emre Can has admitted that thinking about it still gives him a sinking feeling. The midfielder feels that such a result is very hard to process, but they must keep going.
In an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the Borussia Dortmund midfielder said:
"“I still can’t explain it. And it’s still difficult to even talk about it. The whole city, the fans and us, everyone was ready to win this title. Everyone wanted it so badly. But it didn’t work out and unfortunately there’s no going back.”“I don’t even know if it’s possible to really process it. It was that one game in which we could have won the Bundesliga title. The fact that we didn’t manage to do it will probably stay in my mind forever. Whenever I think about it, I get a sinking feeling. Still, we’re professionals and have to keep going, even if it’s hard.”"
Despite the heartbreaking end to the season for Borussia Dortmund, Emre Can played a key role in their excellent run of form in the second half of the season. And he has revealed that a change in mindset helped him turn things around after a disappointing hinrunde.
"“I wasn’t satisfied with the whole first half of the season and wanted to show the side of myself that I’d shown for years. The decisive factor was the change in mindset. I told myself: ‘Emre, step on the gas, do your thing, bring your strengths to the pitch and don’t let yourself be influenced by anything else.”"
There has been some talk regarding Emre Can’s long-term future in recent days, with reports claiming that Borussia Dortmund may look to cash in on him with just 12 months left on his current contract.
The versatile midfielder has said that there have been no talks with the club over a contract extension as of yet, but he feels very comfortable in Dortmund.
Emre Can joined Borussia Dortmund from Juventus in January 2020 and has made a total of 121 appearances for the club. He is currently on international duty with Germany, who are set to play three friendly matches this month.
