Gio Reyna stars as United States win the Concacaf Nations League
Gio Reyna assisted both goals as the United States claimed a 2-0 win over Canada in the final of the Concacaf Nations League.
The USMNT successfully defended their Concacaf Nations League title on Sunday evening, defeating Canada 2-0 in the final. Gio Reyna was the star of the show for his country, as he assisted both goals and helped set up the win.
Playing in the number ten role, Reyna pulled the strings for his side and caused the Canada defenders all sorts of problems in the first half.
The Borussia Dortmund midfielder delivered an inch-perfect corner as Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards opened the scoring in the 12th minute. He then set up Arsenal’s Folarin Balogun with an intelligent through ball from the edge of the box, as the USMNT raced to a two goal lead.
Gio Reyna had to be subbed off at half time after picking up a calf injury. But he had already made a telling impact on the game, and Canada were unable to launch a second half comeback as the USMNT lifted the Nations League title.
With one goal and three assists, Reyna also set the USMNT record for most goal involvements in finals of major tournaments.
Gio Reyna’s performance against Canada showed once again just how much talent he possesses and what he is capable of producing on the big stage. And after enduring a frustrating few months, the 20 year old will now look to establish himself as a regular starter for both club and country in the coming season.
