Report: Borussia Dortmund’s Thomas Meunier is looking for options to leave the club
Borussia Dortmund and Belgium right back Thomas Meunier is taking stock of his option to leave the club a year after initial interest from Barcelona, per reports.
According to reports coming from Spain, Borussia Dortmund’s Thomas Meunier may be on the move this summer, with interest coming from clubs in Serie A and the Premier League. Barcelona had shown interest in the Belgium international in the past, but that trail seems to have run cold. Meunier is seemingly ready to leave regardless, with Dortmund themselves having been clear about their intentions to let Meunier leave for some time now.
According to the reports in question, Inter, Juventus, Milan and Aston Villa have all shown interest in acquiring Meunier’s services. Dortmund, on their part, would likely be looking for a 2-4 million euro fee for the Belgian, though it isn’t out of question that they may allow him to leave without a fee to save money on his hefty wages.
Meunier Joined Borussia Dortmund in July of 2020 as a replacement for the departing Achraf Hakimi, who’s loan deal at the club had expired. The player moved to the Dortmund on a free transfer, which at the time looked like it could be a decent, cost effective deal.
Meunier never really lived up to the level of play one might expect from an established player coming from a club like PSG, with his performances underwhelming more often than not. This season, the Belgian international made a mere 14 appearances in the Bundesliga and Champions League combined, with Edin Terzić preferring to deploy Marius Wolf or Julian Ryerson at right back instead. Niklas Süle was also deployed at right back when necessary, leaving little room for Meunier to get any game-time.
Dortmund’s transfer plans have also indicated that the Belgian international no longer has a future with the club, with Die Schwarzgelben setting their sights on Real Valladolid’s Iván Fresneda as his successor. It is clear at this point that separation is the best result for both parties involved. Both Dortmund and Meunier need a fresh start to ensure they are on the right trajectory moving forward in their respective endeavors.
