Season Awards: The Highlights of Borussia Dortmund’s 2022/2023 Journey

The “Marco Reus” Award: An award for the fans

The name Marco Reus has become synonymous with the word ‘legend’ in Dortmund. The eternal captain has always been known for his dedication on the pitch and loyalty to the Yellow Wall. Therefore, this Season Awards article could not finish on a better note than recognizing the biggest and most loyal legends of them all: our fans.

Considering how things ended on that final matchday a few weeks ago, it would be easy to imagine how enraged fans  have been after the club lost their best shot to win the Bundesliga in years. To be honest, despite the logical sadness with the defeat, I was intrigued by how the fans would react to that bottling.

As the reality of Dortmund’s defeat began to sink in, the fans started clapping and supporting the team. Seeing the fans support for their side despite how low they must have felt made me realize why I love this sport and, especially, why I love this club.

Football is not always about winning or losing; It is about the connection between this beautiful sport and all the communities that sacrifice so much to simply watch a football match on the weekends. Borussia Dortmund fans are the personification of what it means to be loyal to your club, and even when it seems there is no hope for better days. Despite this I am certain that the Yellow Wall will continue to sing:

"“Und wenn du, das Spiel gewinnst, ganz oben stehst, dann steh’n wir hier und sing’: Borussia, Borussia BVB! Und wenn du, das Spiel verlierst, ganz unten stehst, dann steh’n wir hier und sing’: Borussia, Borussia BVB! Was auch immer geschieht,wir steht dir bei, bis in den Tod und sing’ für dich, für dich Borussia. Borussia BVB!”"
