After a disappointing end to the 2022/23 Bundesliga season, Borussia Dortmund are set for a busy summer ahead. The Black and Yellows have a number of pressing issues to deal with in the coming weeks if they want to successfully challenge for the Bundesliga title next season. Here we take a look at three key issues that Borussia Dortmund must address if they want to take the fight to Bayern Munich again next season.

Getting over the heartbreaking title loss

One of the hardest things Borussia Dortmund will have to do this summer is move on from what was a devastating end to their previous league campaign. BVB were one win away from lifting the Bundesliga title for the first time in 11 years but they could only muster a draw against a resilient Mainz side on the final matchday. This meant that Bayern were crowned champions on goal difference.

Losing the title in such a manner was a devastating and heartbreaking moment for everyone at the club, as was evident from the scenes at the Westfalenstadion after the final whistle. Borussia Dortmund must now pick themselves up and find the energy to dust off the psychological scars to go again. In order to do that, a collective effort from the players, fans, and club bosses is needed.

Learning from your mistakes is how you get better and hopefully, BVB will have learned from all the errors they made last season. Borussia Dortmund will be fully aware that nothing can be taken for granted and every game matters if they are to topple Bayern off their throne.

Those in charge are already working to sort out the leadership role so that the team will be ready for any challenge in the new season. BVB could be set for a new captain next season, with the likes of Gregor Kobel, Emre Can, Nico Schlotterbeck being mentioned as possible candidates. Whether or not there is a change in captaincy, the person wearing the armband must lead from the front and set the example for Borussia Dortmund next season.
