Three key issues Borussia Dortmund must address to challenge for the Bundesliga title next season
By Brook Genene
Tightening up the defence
The only signing Borussia Dortmund have made so far this summer has been in defence, with full-back Ramy Bensebaini joining the club on a free transfer from Borussia Mönchengladbach. However, this deal will not be enough as more depth and overall quality is needed in the full-back positions.
For part of last season, Marius Wolf was used as a right-back. But his performances were inconsistent, and there is definitely need for a reinforcement in that position. Following the departure of Raphaël Guerreiro, Bensebaini is expected to be the regular starter at left-back while Julian Ryerson will provide cover at both flanks.
Highly rated right-back Ivan Fresneda is one of Borussia Dortmund’s key targets for this role, and they will be hoping to fend off the likes of Arsenal and FC Barcelona in the race for his signature.
The probable signing of Edson Álvarez from Ajax might take some pressure off of Emre Can, and also allow Edin Terzic to take advantage of the duo’s versatility. So far there hasn’t been any news regarding the transfer of another defender, but signing a back-up centre-back may be another possible item in Sebastian Kehl’s in-tray for this summer.
