Contrasting reports regarding Borussia Dortmund’s interest in Weston McKennie
By Tushar Bahl
There are contrasting reports regarding Borussia Dortmund’s interest in former Schalke 04 midfielder Weston McKennie.
Weston McKennie is expected to leave Juventus this summer, and reports claim that Borussia Dortmund are interested in signing him. According to ESPN, talks between the two parties have recently progressed and BVB could now make a move to sign the midfielder.
Interestingly, BILD claimed on Tuesday that McKennie would prefer to join an English Premier League side and Borussia Dortmund are unlikely to consider signing him due to his Schalke 04 past. WAZ also report that BVB will not be signing him this summer.
The USMNT international spent four years with Borussia Dortmund’s arch-rivals and made 91 appearances for them before joining Juventus in 2020. He was loaned out to Leeds United earlier this year, but returned to Juventus following their relegation from the Premier League. Now, the Italian giants are looking to offload him to fund their squad overhaul.
Following the departures of Jude Bellingham, Mahmoud Dahoud and Raphael Guerreiro, Borussia Dortmund are looking to bolster their midfield ranks this summer and have already signed Felix Nmecha from VfL Wolfsburg. And McKennie could be a shrewd option for the Black and Yellows.
The 24 year old is capable of playing in a variety of different roles in midfield and is a player with plenty of experience of playing at the top level.
Weston McKennie has less than two years left on his Juventus contract, and it will be interesting to see if Borussia Dortmund actually decide to make a move for him this summer.
