Earlier this month, Marco Reus made the decision to step down as Borussia Dortmund captain after five years in the role and ahead of what could be his last season with the Black and Yellows. The club’s focus is now to find a successor who can step in and lead BVB for years to come.

There have been many discussions over the years about Borussia Dortmund needing a strong leader on the pitch if they are to challenge Bayern Munich for the league title. Reus nearly led BVB to the Meisterschale last season, but also lost his spot in the team and is unlikely to have a regular starting role in the upcoming campaign.

By selling Jude Bellingham, Borussia Dortmund not only lost a very good player but also someone who could have been the next captain as he connected really well with the team and fans. As a result, the decision to appoint Reus’ successor will not be an easy one for Sebastian Kehl, Edin Terzic and co.

The leading candidates for the role now appear to be Niklas Süle, Gregor Kobel, Emre Can and Nico Schlotterbeck. These all seem like strong options and have strengths that make them an ideal fit. Here we discuss their claims to be appointed the next Borussia Dortmund captain.
