Gregor Kobel

Gregor Kobel has consistently and single-handedly won Borussia Dortmund matches since his move from Stuttgart in 2021. His leadership qualities are also there for all to see. The Swiss shot-stopper is a strong presence between the sticks, and also commands his defence really well.

Kobel has all the attributes to be a strong captain and is also regarded as many fans’ favourite for the role. Some may not be as enthusiastic about a goalkeeper being captain, as they are usually not as involved on the pitch as outfield players. But Kobel always steps onto the pitch with great confidence, leads from the front in every game, is highly driven and not afraid to speak up. That is why he is one of the favourites to be the club’s next captain.

Niklas Süle

Niklas Süle enjoyed a solid first season at Borussia Dortmund and also showed great leadership in the dressing room during the business end of the campaign. He is a German national team player and a Bundesliga and Champions League winner with Bayern. The centre-back’s title-winning know-how and experience make him a top candidate for the captaincy.

Recent reports also suggest that the young players at Borussia Dortmund listen to Süle and respond well to his words. Süle did come under some harsh criticism from Germany head coach Hansi Flick for his attitude and work ethic during last month’s international break. But he is very highly regarded at Borussia Dortmund, and remains one of the favourites to become the club’s next captain.
