The injury suffered by Gio Reyna on international duty last month could force him to miss a large part of pre-season with Borussia Dortmund.

Gio Reyna returned to the Borussia Dortmund training ground on Saturday, already carrying an injury that he suffered while playing for the United States last month. The 20 year old picked up a calf injury during the CONCACAF Nations League final and hasn’t been able to train with BVB since. And Ruhr Nachrichten are now reporting that the injury could even force him to miss a large part of pre-season.

Reyna is set to miss BVB’s pre-season friendly matches against Rot-Weiß Oberhausen and Rot-Weiß Erfurt this week. Given his popularity, the attacking midfielder will likely be a part of the Borussia Dortmund squad for their upcoming US Tour. But it remains to be seen if he will be able to play in any of their three friendly matches there.

Gio Reyna has been forced to deal with a number of injuries over the last two seasons, and has spent just 1661 minutes on the pitch for the Black and Yellows as a result. Despite his lack of playing time, the 20 year old managed to score seven goals in the Bundesliga last season.

The coming season will be a crucial one for Reyna, as he looks to cement his place in the Borussia Dortmund starting XI and realise his potential. And his fitness could well dictate the club’s long-term plans with him, with his current contract set to expire at the end of next season.
