Emre Can has said that he is ready to take on a leadership role at Borussia Dortmund, with or without the captain’s armband.

Borussia Dortmund are looking for a new captain following Marco Reus’ decision to step down from the role. Emre Can is said to be one of the leading candidates to become the next BVB captain, with Niklas Süle and Gregor Kobel also thought to be in contention.

The midfielder was asked about his interest in becoming the next Borussia Dortmund captain, and stated that he would be happy to take on the role.

"“I wouldn’t be disappointed if I didn’t become captain, and I’d be happy if I did,” Can said. “Either way, I will try to lead the way. My job is to help the team.”"

Emre Can signed a contract extension with Borussia Dortmund earlier this week, that will keep him at the club until the end of the 2025/26 season. The BVB bosses were considering replacing the 29 year old with Edson Álvarez earlier this summer. But in the end, they decided to extend Can’s contract and pulled out of the race to sign Álvarez.

Can is set to be Borussia Dortmund’s first-choice defensive midfielder this season. And he will almost certainly be a part of the team’s leadership council as well. Whether that will be as captain still remains to be seen. Those in charge are planning to hold talks with the leading candidates during the club’s US Tour. And a decision on who will succeed Marco Reus will be made before the start of the season.
