According to Sport1, Borussia Dortmund have shown interest in Red Star Belgrade center back Stefan Lekovic.

According to reports, Borussia Dortmund are being linked with Red Star Belgrade defender Stefan Lekovic. The Serbian youth international is a very highly rated center back that has already attracted interest from a host of top clubs over the course of his relatively short career so far.

According to the report, Lekovic is at the center of a three way Bundesliga tug of war with Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig also interested in the player’s services. With defensive reinforcements being one of the main areas of interest in Dortmund’s plans for the current transfer window, a move for the young a Serbian defender could be a solid deal for the right price. Manchester City allegedly offered four million euros for the defender over the course of the winter window, but this bid was summarily rejected by Red Star.

Lekovic is known for being assertive in the tackle and using his tall stature to help win aerial duels for his side. He is also an able contribution to his sides build-up play, which is often what clubs look for when signing a center back these days.

Dortmund’s current center back situations stands as follows; The club currently have Mats Hummels, Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck to choose from. While Lekvoic will be unlikely to knock either Süle or Schlotterbeck out of the starting 11, Hummels is in the twilight of his career. Hummels will certainly still play an important role for the club and contribute substantial minutes on the pitch, but having a player like Lekovic to help carry that burden will help make sure the club can rotate players as necessary and lower the risk of injury. In the face of injury, he would be yet another young, talented player for Dortmund that can slot in, which would allow Lekovic the chance to seize the opportunity to showcase the immense talent that has garnered so much interest over the last year.
