Borussia Dortmund capped off their 2023 US Tour by playing out a hard fought 1-1 draw against Chelsea in Chicago.
The penultimate game of Borussia Dortmund’s pre-season saw them earn a 1-1 draw against English Premier League side Chelsea at the Soldier Field in Chicago. Marius Wolf was on target for the Black and Yellows, but his 80th minute opener was canceled out by Mason Burstow’s late equaliser.
It was a resilient performance from Borussia Dortmund, who kept Chelsea at bay for large parts of the game even though the Mauricio Pochettino’s side dominated possession.
Borussia Dortmund can take plenty of positives from the defensive resolve they displayed. But there are also several things that they must address quickly if they want to challenge for the Bundesliga title in the coming season.
Edin Terzic made a few changes to his starting XI, with Ramy Bensebaini, Youssoufa Moukoko and Marco Reus coming into the team that beat Manchester United 3-2 on Sunday.
Chelsea started the game on the front foot and created a number of decent openings in the first half. Bensebaini especially impressed for Borussia Dortmund, and came up with several crucial defensive contributions. Although the Algerian international was lucky to avoid a serious injury after he was on the end of a dangerous and unnecessary challenge from Reece James.
Borussia Dortmund didn’t create much in terms of chances, but took the shock lead in the 80th minute when Marius Wolf opened the scoring after a shot from the edge of the box found its way to him.
But BVB switched off at a set-piece and allowed Chelsea youngster Mason Burstow to equalise in the 89th minute.
The game ended 1-1 and Borussia Dortmund will now return to Germany to begin their final preparations for the start of the 2023/24 season. BVB will face Ajax in a friendly match on Sunday before traveling to TSV Schott Mainz for their DFB-Pokal first round tie on August 12.
