Dietmar Hamann has downplayed Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga title credentials, as he believes that the scars of missing out on the Meisterschale last season will hurt them for some time.

The 2023/24 Bundesliga season will get underway in ten days’ time, and there is plenty of optimism at Borussia Dortmund after an encouraging pre-season that saw them go unbeaten over seven matches. But Dietmar Hamann does not think that the Black and Yellows will become Bundesliga champions in the coming season.

In an interview with BILD, the former Bayern Munich and Liverpool midfielder said that last season’s failure to win the Bundesliga title will affect Borussia Dortmund for some time.

"“Dortmund’s dramatic season finale will linger with them for some time, and for some perhaps even for the rest of their careers, I’m afraid. That’s why I’d like to see one or two more new, fresh players there. I think we’ll see another champion before BVB.”"

Borussia Dortmund lost the Bundesliga title to Bayern Munich in dramatic fashion on the final day of last season. Needing a win against Mainz 05 to win the title, Edin Terzic’s side could only manage a 2-2 draw and lost out to the Bavarians on goal difference after Jamal Musiala scored an 89th minute winner for them against FC Köln.

The Borussia Dortmund players will now hope to turn that heartbreak into motivation to go one better this season. BVB have made three signings to bolster their squad so far this summer, bringing in Ramy Bensebaini, Felix Nmecha, and Marcel Sabitzer.
